Five things I learned on autumn trails
Shorter days, wet leaves and cold mornings change how I plan every walk once September arrives.
Daylight is the real limit. I now plan routes to finish at least an hour before sunset and always carry a light, even on short loops.
Wet leaves hide roots and stones, so my pace drops on descents. Good boots and a pair of poles have saved my knees more than once.
